Our first motorhome trip was in August 2020 in Germany. The 4 of us had long dreamed of traveling by motorhome but always ended up traveling to far away countries and leaving this experience for another time.

Summer came and the covid continued around the world. We thought it was the best time to move freely with the house on our backs. Freedom and independence was the best option and we finally made this dream come true.

To choose our destination we considered routes in Spain and Europe. When comparing prices, Germany was the cheapest option.

We opted for the company Indie Campers and a caravan model Atlas with capacity for 5 people. They have branches all over Europe, go to their website and you will see that there are a lot of models and at a very good price.

We arrived in Germany with a flight from Barcelona as we came from touring the Pyrenees on a nature and adventure sports trip, doing a tourist promotion with Turismo de La Ribagorza and Casa Moliné. In our Instagram you can see it!

Do not forget to go through our selection of photographic material to immortalize everything you will find on this route.

The Romantic Road, or Romantische Straße, runs through southern Germany, specifically between the Bavarian and Baden-Württemberg Länder.

Munich.

Munich

The route does not actually go through Munich but its proximity to it and the importance of this city in terms of heritage and history makes it a good starting or finishing point for this route.

It is essential to discover its historic center, eat in one of its centennial breweries, and discover countless corners that make this city one of the most beautiful in Germany.

We rented our motorhome after spending two days discovering the city.

From here we headed to a campsite located about 100 km from Munich, specifically in Lechbruck, a small village on the shores of a lake located just 30 minutes from Füssen.

2. Füssen and Neuschwanstein Castle

We settled in at the Via Claudia campsite in Lechbruck, where we would spend the next 3 nights on our first motorhome adventure, which is something to talk about in another post!

Neuschwantein Castle
Neuschwanstein

In this area there are many beautiful places to visit, perhaps the most famous is the Schloss Neuschwanstein, also known as the Mad King's Castle. The truth is that it is imposing as a building but much more for the situation in which it is located, surrounded by mountains and overlooking Lake Forggensee.

If you want to visit it inside, buy tickets well in advance, you can do it on their website . We, due to the pandemic, a little improvised trip and with the restrictions of affluence we could only visit it on the outside, even so we recommend it.

To visit it you must park your car in the parking lots that are enabled in the village and from there there there are different ways to go up, by bus, walking or by carriage. We decided to take the bus. We bought the tickets on the bus.

They take you up to the entrance where you have to queue to go over the suspension bridge that is right at the back of the castle so the views are even more incredible with the lake in the background.

Füssen
Fussen

This small village is a must if you visit its neighboring castle. Here you have to visit its Abbey and the high castle. But the best thing to do is to stroll through its streets and stop in a square to have one of its great ice cream!

3. Forggensee

We recommend you to enjoy this lake at some point during your stay in the area, you can find areas where you can have a great picnic, or if you travel in summer time enjoy a swim in one of its water sports.

4.Tegelbergbahn Slides

You can not miss the experience of jumping down one of these slides at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle.

Sommerrodelbahn Tegelberg

We assure you that the fun is guaranteed! Here we leave you their website so that you have all the information, remember that these slides are only open in summer.

5. Towns Romantic Route

Here is a map of the route we took and some photos of these charming villages. We recommend you to spend at least 4 days and make stops to discover the villages that you will find on this road.

Dinkelsbühl

Most of them are very small and in about 30 minutes you will have walked through its center.

Enjoy the slow travel, the landscape, the road that passes through nature and charming villages and take the opportunity to make a photographic route and immortalize these idyllic days in motorhome in a fairytale place.

Romantic Route

You will discover beautiful villages and fairytale towns as well as incredible landscapes, between mountains, lakes and large green meadows.

legoland

We had been thinking about going to both Legoland and Playmobil Fun Park for years and before we knew it our oldest was already 7 years old. What better time to go since this year we thought we should stay closer on our vacation.

We spent 2 days at Legoland and spent the night in the camping site for motorhomes, it is well located and good value for money. It has a common area with bathrooms and laundry facilities. And it is a 10 minute walk from the park. On the way you pass through the log cabin area which is already set up with Legos and small playgrounds. The last stretch passes through a small forest.

The park has different areas set in lego themes and characters. It has a play area and different attractions. The truth is that we think it is a park recommended for rather small children as there are many play areas for babies, for children up to 2 years. We recommend it for children up to 7-8 years old but we think it is intended mainly for younger children. It is a very interesting visit, especially for little Lego fans like our kids, but it is not essential.

NInjago

7. Blaubeuren

blaubeuren

This village is not included in the romantic route but due to its proximity we recommend you to make this stop.

Actually the impressive thing is not the village but a small turquoise blue lake, surrounded by lots of vegetation and an old mill makes this place magical.

If you search the internet you will see that there are legends that speak of mermaids in this lake, discover it!

8. Rothenburgob der Tauber (Rothenburg ob der Tauber)

Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The jewel of the route without a doubt, immortalized millions of times in some of its most famous corners, this town is a must stop.

We took the opportunity to sleep in the caravan area located just at the entrance of the village.

We recommend you to walk along the wall and go into the streets! a delight!

Playmobil FunPark

On our route we also set aside a day to visit Playmobil Fun Park. Although it is like a giant park, not an amusement park, it is very well set in the different playmobil themes.

Here you will find the pirate area with several pirate ships, the tree house area with dinosaurs, the mermaids area, the farm, the west... It has different fast food restaurants.

And a very cool store where you can find unique toys. For the parents it is not very entertaining but they enjoy it as they seem to have become little Playmobils and can get into the toys. An unforgettable day for them.

Don't forget your swimsuit!

In our Post traveling with Playmobil you will find the Playmobil that are always with us!

10. Nuremberg

Nuremberg

Our route ended in Nuremberg. Mateo went to drop off the motorhome and we spent the day in this beautiful city. We loved wandering around the city, walking the city walls inside and outside and discovering the canals.

Undoubtedly a very complete route in which to enjoy nature, charming villages, amusement parks for children and discover two beautiful German cities.
